My Estranged Parents Want to Reconnect, and I’m Struggling With How to React

Marta’s life was shaped by the love and guidance of her grandmother. She managed to build a fulfilling life for herself, completing her education, finding love with James, and achieving success in her career. But then, her peace was shattered when she received a mysterious email from her long-lost father.

“Back when I was just 7 years old, my parents went through a divorce. But thanks to my amazing grandmother, I found a loving home without any hesitation.
When I turned 18, I successfully completed my high school education. My parents had already drifted away from my life, their irregular birthday cards and holiday emails coming to a complete halt. It was just Grandma and me, and that was all we needed.

Recently, I started working at a marketing firm and had the pleasure of meeting James, a talented graphic designer. Our friendship blossomed into something more, and he popped the question just last month. Life was brimming with fulfillment and contentment.

Recently, I received a surprise email from my dad that caught me off guard. He mentioned that he had lost his job and was in a difficult situation with no place to go.

He asked about the possibility of staying with me for a period of time. As I delved into his words, a whirlwind of emotions swept over me – a surprising blend of surprise, anger, and confusion.

How could he have the audacity to ask for my help after completely abandoning me for such a long period of time?

I shared the email with James, and he asked if I was interested in meeting up. I felt compelled to, but just to inform him that he was not welcome.

I remember the day we first crossed paths, it was at a charming little café. He appeared to be in a state of desperation, so I wasted no time in getting to the heart of the matter. I made it clear to him that I wasn’t providing him with accommodation and reminded him that he had no entitlement to ask after all this time. He became furious, claiming that he had supported me financially and ensured my well-being until I reached the age of 18. He claimed that I was ungrateful and rude.

I could feel my frustration building up. It was truly disappointing to be left behind, and receiving money didn’t make up for it. It was Grandma who had raised me, not him. In a heated outburst, he raised his voice, insisting that he had done everything within his power and accusing me of abandoning him.

I feel that I made the right decision, but still in doubt.
Best regards, Marta”
