I no longer force my son to say “Thank you” or “Sorry.” Here’s why…

Posted on August 23, 2024 By Tristan Tate

When it comes to parenting methods, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Every parent has their own unique method of raising their children. One such mom is Emma, a 38-year-old woman who contacted Bright Side to discuss her unusual parenting approach and seek help from other parents who have encountered similar difficulties.

Emma made a conscious effort to end the pattern of rigorous parenting in her own family. Growing up under her parents’ authoritarian authority had a terrible effect on her mental health, generating anxiety and lowering her self-esteem. She did not want her son, Georgie, to go through the same ordeals. She believes in providing a loving atmosphere for him by emphasizing love, respect, and open communication.

Emma’s approach to parenting includes not pressuring her son to apologize or say thank you and please. According to her, forcing children to apologize, even if they don’t mean it, teaches deception. Instead, Emma instills empathy in Georgie without requiring phony apologies. She gives him time and space to ponder his choices and realize the repercussions. This strategy enables Georgie to acquire true empathy and learn from his errors.

Emma attracted criticism for not forcing Georgie to apologize after he pushed another youngster on the playground. Instead, she apologized to the youngster and hoped that her son would learn positive behavior from her example. Another parent, however, was not pleased with Emma’s attitude and referred to her as a “bad and irresponsible mother.”

Emma’s husband and others consistently criticize her despite the significant impact of her parenting methods. This has caused her to doubt her judgments. She seeks feedback from the Bright Side audience and wants to hear what they think of her approach.

It’s vital to realize that there isn’t a single proper approach to parenting. Different methods suit different families. What matters most is that we provide a caring and supportive atmosphere for our children to learn and grow in. As parents, we should follow our instincts and do what we feel is best for our children, even if it contradicts societal conventions.

Parenting is about striking a balance between punishment and understanding. It’s about teaching our children empathy and guiding them through the world with love and respect. Let us assist one another in our parenting adventures and build a community that values diverse opinions.
