A pregnant woman ruined my birthday party, but I had my plan.

My birthday was yesterday, and my husband invited his closest buddy, Matt, and Matt’s pregnant girlfriend, Jane, to a cookout. They live two houses down from us. It was just us, our three children, and them (with their three kids). I spent approximately $90 on hamburgers and hotdogs. Matt also brought two pounds of meat for hamburgers. While the men were cooking, I went swimming with the rest of the kids in our pond. Jane was on her phone as she sat next to the boys.Around 5:30, the guys invited the youngsters over for supper.

My middle child (9) and I were not hungry yet, so we continued swimming. We spent an additional 40+ minutes in the water riding our tubes. I wasn’t paying any attention to what was going on around the grill. Around 6:15, my husband mentioned that he was heading to the supermarket, so I told my kid that we should definitely go eat now. By the time we arrived at the grill, my husband and Matt had left, as had Jane. When we got up to the grill, the food was all gone.

I contacted my husband and inquired where all of the food was, and he said it should be on the grill. I told him that everything was gone. There was a long pause before he responded, “Jane asked if she could take some for leftovers, but I didn’t think she would take all of it.” He then told me that there were at least 8 burgers and 10 hotdogs remaining, as well as macaroni salad, when he went to the store 10 minutes earlier.

I told him to contact Matt and ask where all the food was. He did. He then called me back to say Matt said Jane only took “a few” and they had already been consumed. But my oldest son (13) told me straight away that he saw Jane walk off our property with the entire dish (one of those extra huge tin foil BBQ dishes). Anyway, I was upset at this time. Neither I nor my son had eaten anything.

My husband was also furious, but instead of making a scene, he simply grabbed something from the store for my son and me. I didn’t blame him (he and Matt work together, so this is how it is). Anyway, to my surprise, Jane and her children returned over 45 minutes later and begged for a piece of my cake. I told Jane that her children could but she couldn’t. She questioned why, to which I said, “I’m pretty sure you’ve eaten plenty, considering you took off with my entire BBQ dinner before my son and I could eat anything.”

She attempted to claim that my husband told her she could have it, that “half of it was hers” (since they brought 2 lbs of hamburger meat), and that she “didn’t realize” my child and I hadn’t eaten (she was at the grill the entire time). I just shrugged my shoulders and went away. She told her children, “Let’s go,” and they left without cake. At this point, I suspected I had been a jerk. Nobody has said anything since, but I can tell there is tension.
